Shortest Path

Shortest Path is the platform's recommended connectivity configuration and is provided by default when creating a new customer using the default platform configuration.

Shortest Path combines Auto Internet routing with Optimised Regional Policy to automatically deliver subscriber traffic to the most appropriate internet breakout location worldwide. Together, these capabilities ensure subscriber traffic follows the shortest and most efficient available route to the internet without requiring complex country or region-specific routing rules.

With Shortest Path enabled, the platform determines the optimal location for traffic to enter and exit the network based on factors such as latency, geographic proximity, network conditions, traffic load, and gateway availability. This allows traffic to be routed through the most appropriate regional edge location and automatically out to the internet at that location.

For example, two subscribers using the same APN may be connected in different parts of the world. A subscriber in China may be routed through a Singapore internet breakout location, while a subscriber in Canada may be routed through a US internet breakout location. The platform automatically selects the most suitable path for each subscriber independently.

Enabling Shortest Path

If your configuration is not already using the default platform setup, you can enable Shortest Path by configuring Auto Internet routing and an Optimised Regional Policy.

Step 1: Create an Internet Routing Target

Create a new Routing Target configured witht the following fields:

  • Target Type: Internet
  • Region: Auto

Step 2: Update Your Routing Policy

Configure your Routing Policy so that traffic is forwarded to the Auto Internet Routing Target.

This is achieved by creating a single rule that forwards all traffic to the Auto Internet Routing Target.

Step 3: Update your Endpoint Group(s)

Configure the appropriate endpoint groups:

  • set the Routing Policy to the one you created / edited in Step 2
  • set the Regional Policy to Optimised Routing

Once these steps are complete, the platform automatically combines intelligent regional gateway selection with automatic internet breakout to provide the shortest available path to the internet for each subscriber.
